Haematococcus pluvialis
Depite of the red color Haematococcus pluvialis is a chlorophyte alga which occurs preferentially in more or less regularly drying puddles of acidic rocks like granite or sandstone as seen here. In this Habitat also the rotifer Philodina roseola has been found.
 
Haematococcus pluvialis, aplanospores. The spores are colored red by astaxanthin. The dye serves as protection against UV rays. According to the" Kosmos Algenführer", Astaxanthin is used biotechnically as a dye in animal feed.
